Nativity Lent 2018 Message from Bishop Maxim

As we are entering Nativity Lent, the Church invites us to observe the fast to the best of your ability, in order to partake of the great cosmogenic reality of Christ's Incarnation.

Fasting is a great spiritual endeavor and the foremost expression of the Orthodox ascetic ideal. According to Basil the Great, fasting is as old as humanity itself; it was prescribed in paradise.

For this reason, the Church has always proclaimed the great significance of fasting for our spiritual life and salvation. This discipline is there not just as a seasonal diet but is a guide to curb other harmful aspects of our lives so that we may develop a virtuous life.

I invite you, beloved ones, with the guidance of your parish priest, to strive to observe the fast as well as one can, "repealing bad habits and replacing them with virtues."

May our Lord grant to you and your loved ones a blessed and peaceful Nativity Lent.

With Love in Christ,

Bishop Maxim

Thanksgiving Day 2017

Serbian Orthodox Church in North and South America
EPISCOPAL COUNCIL

November 9/22, 2017
LIBERTYVILLE

Thanksgiving Day 2017

"Without thanksgiving to God there can be no progress in the spiritual life. Ceaseless thanksgiving to God is noble seed from which, if it is watered by the tears of unceasing repentance, a beautiful fruit grows— love for God." - Saint Nicholai [Velimirovic], Prologue of Ohrid

To the Reverend Priests and Deacons, the Monks and Nuns, the Executive Boards and Members of the Church-School Congregations of the Serbian Orthodox Communities in North and South America, the Circles of Serbian Sisters of our Parishes and Dioceses, the beloved Children and Youth and the entire Serbian Orthodox Family in North and South America: Greetings to you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

The American feast of Thanksgiving is an opportunity which beautifully invites us to once more focus our attention on the many blessings God has given to us. As we celebrate this day, let us give thanks to God for his great love for us and for the joy of our salvation in Christ. Let us also give thanks for our families, friends and for our Church communities, which each enhance our experience of life, as together we journey to the great Thanksgiving banquet of His Kingdom. We as your Archpastors, are thankful for your commitment to Church, which includes your faithful presence, prayers and support.

Gratitude is foremost in our liturgical experience and faith which guide us to offer thanksgiving all the time, to live in thanksgiving in all of the circumstances and challenges of life. By singing hymns of praise and thanksgiving, we honor God who gives us "every good and perfect gift." [James 1:17] When we celebrate and receive the Sacrament of Thanksgiving, the Holy Eucharist, we are united with Christ and one another, so that the beautiful fruit of love for God may grow in us and inspire us to extend His love to others. Therefore, let us this Thanksgiving also remember those who are in need, and extend to them the love of God.

As we will soon begin the Nativity Fast, We ask God to bless you abundantly, and pray that with thanksgiving, all of us may progress in the spiritual life during these coming days of preparation and expectation for the feast of Christmas.

With paternal love in Christ,

LONGIN

SUNDAY OF MYRRHBEARERS
НЕДЕЉА МИРОНOСНИЦА

Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body. Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where he was laid.

Easter Weekend 2017

"Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.'"

John 11:25-26

Starting with Good Friday and culminating on Bright Monday our Church parish was treated to an extraordinary Easter.

Great Saturday Evening Services were officiated by Bishop Maxim along with our parish priest, Fr. Jovic. The traditional candle light service started late on Saturday evening and ended after midnight on Easter. Breakfast was served to the those who attended in the Church Library.

Easter Agape Services were held in our new church on Sunday as served by Fr. Jovic. After service the traditional Easter Lunch was served in our Social Hall. The hall was decorated by the KOLO Ladies and was transformed into an Easter Wonderland. Before lunch was served our Ladies Choir, Iskra entertained the lunch guests. Our KOLO also had its most successful Bake Sale ever!

On Monday Bishop Maxim returned to our church to celebrate Bright Monday. For those of you who could not attend on Monday morning this was really a wonderful service.Along with Fr. Jovic the priests from all the Bay Area Churches including Jackson were in attendance. After service Popadija Biljana from Jackson treated those who attended to an impromptu concert.

He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 'The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.' "

RESURRECTION OF OUR LORD (EASTER)
ВАСКРСЕЊЕ ХРИСТОВО (ВАСКРС)

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone's sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."

Jesus is greeted with palms as he enters Jerusalem.

PALM SUNDAY
ЦВЕТНА НЕДЕЉА

The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out:
"Hosanna!
'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!'
The King of Israel!"

5th SUNDAY OF GREAT LENT
5. НЕДЕЉА ПОСТА

They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took the Twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him.  "We are going up to Jerusalem," he said, "and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law."

4th SUNDAY OF GREAT LENT
4. НЕДЕЉА ПОСТА

A man in the crowd answered, "Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not."
"You unbelieving generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me."

Sunday of Prodigal Son, Patriarchate of Pec. Kosovo & Metohija, Serbia

SUNDAY OF PRODIGAL SON
НЕДЕЉА БЛУДНОГ СИНА

And he said, "There was a man who had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.' And he divided his property between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to[a] one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything.
